How does Magic Writing work when I select text with the wand?

Magic Writing lets you rewrite any text you've already selected on your screen: click the wand icon on the Swifly overlay, and Swifly rewrites the selection in place using either Magic Polish (light cleanup) or Magic Rewrite (deeper restructuring) — no need to dictate again.

Magic Polish vs. Magic Rewrite

Magic Writing offers two transforms, plus the option to leave your text untouched:

• Original Dictation — keeps your text exactly as recognized, with no rewriting.
• Magic Polish — improves clarity and conciseness while keeping your tone.
• Magic Rewrite — restructures the text for readability.

On macOS, each mode also has a keyboard shortcut: Option+N for Original Dictation, Option+P for Magic Polish, and Option+R for Magic Rewrite. You can change these shortcuts from the Magic Writing page in the app.

Using the wand on selected text

To rewrite text you've already written (in an email, a document, a chat — any app):

1. Select the text you want to transform.
2. Click the wand icon on the Swifly overlay. It applies your currently selected mode (Magic Polish or Magic Rewrite) to the selection.
3. Swifly replaces the selected text with the rewritten version, right where it was.

Clicking the overlay doesn't take focus away from your app, so your text selection stays active while Swifly works.

Auto-apply for new dictations

Magic Writing also has an Auto apply toggle. When it's on, your selected mode (Magic Polish or Magic Rewrite) is applied automatically to every new dictation, so you don't have to press a shortcut each time. When it's off, dictations come through as Original Dictation unless you use a mode's shortcut for that specific dictation.

You can turn Auto apply on or off, and change your selected mode, either from the wand menu on the overlay or from the Magic Writing page in the app.

When the wand can't complete the rewrite

A few situations are handled safely:

• Nothing selected — select some text first, then click the wand.
• Password field — Magic Writing never reads or rewrites text in a password field.
• You switch windows mid-rewrite — if you switch to a different app while Swifly is working, the rewritten text is placed on your clipboard instead of being pasted, so you can paste it yourself.
• Selection too long — very long selections aren't supported; try a shorter passage.

In every case, your original text and your clipboard contents are preserved if the rewrite doesn't go through.

Availability

Magic Writing is currently in beta and available on macOS and Windows. It requires an active Swifly Pro plan.
